(Houston, TX) With the rise in oral cancer rates, the University of Texas Health School of Dentistry committed to incorporating advanced oral cancer screening options into the curriculum. In order to improve the rate of early diagnosis, the use of fluorescence imaging is advantageous because it improves the visualization of oral mucosal tissue abnormalities since premalignant may not be readily apparent with the naked eye. UTHealth School of Dentistry evaluated all fluorescence devices commercially available and the OralID was selected to clinically educate 3rdand 4thyear dental students to visualize mucosal areas within the entire mouth.
According to Warner et al., the OralID was a good choice for the UTHealth School of Dentistry for several reasons. The enclosed filtered glasses allow simultaneous examination by the student and faculty member. The OralID is easily disinfected by using CaviWipes™ or an equivalent to clean the entire device after each use. Since disposable barrier sleeves are not required, there are not any added costs per use.1
Forward Science, manufacturer of the OralID, is excited to partner with one of the top dental schools in the nation but is not surprised they chose OralID. “We designed the OralID with ease of use and without any per patient costs so we can partner with everyone from small single offices, large dental schools, and even remote locations in third world countries,” shared Co-Founder and CEO Robert J. Whitman. “The more screenings performed, the more lives that can be saved.” Forward Science is excited to now have students being exposed to advanced screening devices like OralID, preparing to serve their patient population upon graduation.
