Dr. Jonathan An Receives ADA Foundation Dentsply Sirona Research Award for Dual Degree Candidates

Chicago, January 11, 2018 – Jonathan An, D.D.S., a Ph.D. candidate in oral health sciences at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, has received the inaugural ADA Foundation Dentsply Sirona Research Award for Dual Degree Candidates.

The award promotes and recognizes excellence in oral health research by annually providing $10,000 in financial assistance to a dual degree (D.D.S./D.M.D. and Ph.D.) candidate who is pursuing a career in research that advances the oral health of the public.

Dr. An earned his D.D.S. degree from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 2015. For his Ph.D. studies, he is studying the basic biology of aging in the laboratory of Dr. Matt Kaeberlein, taking novel strategies to apply discoveries from the field of geroscience in order to understand an unmet oral health concern for the elderly in the form of periodontal disease.

“As a dentist-scientist, I hope to bridge the ties between chair-side observations and bench science,” said Dr. An. “The information attained from research leads to more effective treatments, thereby leading to improvement of patient care and quality of life. The ADAF Dentsply Sirona Research Award will strengthen my intent of becoming an academic clinician and researcher, and help me be more equipped to make a positive difference in others’ lives.”

Dr. An has been awarded numerous accolades including the IADR Heraeus Travel Award (2010), first place at both the AADR and IADR Hatton Awards Competitions (2012), as well as winning the ADA/Dentsply Student Research Clinician Program (2013). In addition, Jonathan is both an ARCS Scholar (2015) and was recognized in 2017 as a Magnuson Scholar. When he is not in the laboratory, Dr. An volunteers as a dentist at Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission.

“I am thrilled with the quality of the applications and number of talented individuals who are pursuing a Ph.D. degree in addition to their dental education,” said Terri Dolan, D.D.S, M.P.H., vice president and chief clinical officer for Dentsply Sirona. “These are the future leaders in dental education and oral health research, and Dentsply Sirona is proud to provide support to one of these outstanding clinician scientists through this research award.”

“The number of dentists continuing their education in scientific research is impressive.  These individuals will help ensure the translation of research to patient use,” said William R. Calnon, D.D.S., president, ADA Foundation. “The ADA Foundation Dentsply Sirona Research Award assists in achieving that goal. Dr. An is a perfect example of the true talent that we have in our profession.”

The award funds may be used to cover expenses related to attending the American Association for Dental Research SCADA competition (Student Competition for Advancing Dental Research and its Application) and, in addition, may be used to defray the cost of one or more of the following: a research project approved by the ADA Foundation; attending one or more scientific conferences in order to further the recipient’s knowledge or skills; and/or presenting their findings at such scientific conference.
